Cat-back vs Axle-back: which do you need?

The short version

An axle-back replaces only the rearmost section — cheaper, easier, mostly a sound change. A cat-back replaces everything from the catalytic converter back, for a bigger sound and modest flow gains.

Sound

Cat-back systems open up more of the exhaust path, so they are louder and deeper across the rev range. Axle-back changes are more subtle and concentrated near idle and low revs.

Power

On most street cars the flow gains are small — expect single-digit horsepower. Buy for the sound and fitment first, and treat power as a bonus.
